In 2011, YPN-ULEM established an Annual Leadership Development Conference (LDC) to provide opportunities for young professionals enhance their personal and professional development skills in order to advance in leadership and their career paths. The conference is designed to address issues related to educational, personal and professional development. Additionally, this conference serves as a program for the National Urban League Young Professionals Day of Empowerment, a nationwide service activity held in conjunction with the National Urban League Guild. WINNER 2013 Be A Better Bud Program Award 2016 National Day of Empowerment Award As the nation continues to grapple with social inequality and racial hostility, it is necessary to have an open and honest conversation about issues that directly impact young professionals and how they can get their seat at the table. An interactive session where speakers will share their personal insights on how they became passive members of society to change agents and leaders today – participants will have an active brainstorming session on how they can achieve the same results. How do other minority groups navigate the professional & social systems of society? What are some of the similarities we share as people of color, and how can we learn from and support one another? What are some of the experiences and opinions (positive and negative) shared by members of the Diaspora on a global scale? How can we learn from the parallels seen between those experiences and those of black people in the USA? African-American buying power in 2015 was [.2 trillion – yet 93% of this money is spent OUTSIDE of the community. This workshop will explore the how change agents can change the narrative and increase the generational wealth of their families, businesses and communities. The constant imagery of racially triggered violence across the country can have a subconscious and unhealthy effect on our mental health. Are we living in a PTSD state? What can we do as change agents do change the narrative and heal the wounds? As a minority group in the United States, black people are constantly asked to assimilate to the ideals of white society in every aspect of our lives, including our biology. In the wake of the recent Supreme Court ruling, how do we as black people show that there is room at the table for not only us, but our natural hair as well? Forming a long term relationship when building your network takes time and effort – but what do you do to make a lasting first impression and create that instant connection? This workshop will provide you the tips, tricks and tools to make that impression and connection meaningful. You than will have the chance to exercise your new skills in the Networking Power Hour! Inside View What must it be like to be a minority in law enforcement? How do they deal with implicit bias, the struggles and conflicts of working and being in a culture the predominately impacts their own ethnicity? And how does it feel to be a minority going through this system? Ever heard comments like “I was only joking, stop being so serious”? Are you tired of hearing statements such as “I don’t see color”? With today’s heightened racial climate it can sometime be hard to know when to push a point or when to leave the topic all together.
