    I Am Empowered Leadership Awards

    The Young Professionals Network of the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts (YPN-ULEM) is pleased to award its I AM EMPOWERED LEADERSHIP AWARDS to honor outstanding YP leaders within the organization and supporters/partners that have contributed to YPN-ULEM and our global community. These awards recognize those individuals and businesses in the Greater Boston and Eastern Massachusetts areas who are empowering their community and committed to professional and leadership development. Recipients of these awards demonstrate the core values of the National Urban League (NUL), the Urban League of Eastern MA (ULEM) and YPN-ULEM through service, leadership, and excellent character. 

    Awards are given in the following categories annually:

    • YPN-ULEM Executive Leadership Award
    • YPN-ULEM Committee of the Year Award
    • YPN-ULEM Member of the Year Award
    • YPN-ULEM Member Leadership Award
    • YPN-ULEM President's Award – Individual
    • YPN-ULEM President’s Award – Business/Non-Profit/Organization

    Below you will find the criteria for each award, who can nominate someone for an award, and what questions to be answered when submitting a nomination. Nominations are now open and should be received by Wednesday, March 21, 2018, 11:59 PM.

    The YPN-ULEM Leadership Awards are for a member of the executive board / committee chairs. Nominations are made by the YPN-ULEM general body. A subcommittee comprised of one member from each committee and two YPN-ULEM individuals from outside the committee community will review the nominations. Each committee chair/co-chair will select one member from their respective committees to be on the YPN-ULEM Leadership Awards Committee and forward contact information to membership@ypnulem.org. A separate email communication will be sent to this newly formed committee, explaining their role.

    The YPN-ULEM Executive Leadership Award is for an Executive Leadership Team Member that has engaged its members and non-members alike, demonstrates the values of a leader that are important to you, and has gone above and beyond. This leader is involved with many chapter activities and is actively engaged. This leader effectively influences, assists in the planning and execution of chapter events and programs, and make things happen for the betterment of the chapter. Nominations are made by the YPN-ULEM general body. As a member of YPN-ULEM, when submitting your nomination for the YPN-ULEM Executive Leadership Award be sure to answer the following questions.

    • Name of nominator and role in YPN-ULEM
    • Name of nominee and role in YPN-ULEM
    • What are the three most important values you want in a leader? How has this person demonstrated these values?
    • Describe a time this individual has gone above and beyond?
    • Anything else of importance you would like to add?

    The YPN-ULEM Committee of the Year Award is for a committee that has engaged its members and non-members alike, and has gone above and beyond. This committee has involvement across other committees by their members and is actively engaged. This committee effectively influences, plans and execute events and programs, and make things happen across committees. Nominations are made by the YPN-ULEM general body. As a member of YPN-ULEM, when submitting your nomination for the YPN-ULEM Committee of the Year Award be sure to answer the following questions.

    • Name of nominator and role in YPN-ULEM
    • Name of nominated committee.
    • Each committee is challenged to encourage, engage and inspire people within the community. How has the nominated committee completed each of these tasks? Please provide examples.
    • How has this committee demonstrated team work within the committee itself and via working with other committees?
    • Anything else of importance you would like to add?

    The YPN-ULEM Member Leadership Award is for a YPN-ULEM member who in your perspective has gone above and beyond the average. This member is the person you see helping at events, providing support to the executive leadership and networking with members and guests. As a member of YPN-ULEM, when submitting your nomination for the YPN-ULEM Member Leadership Award be sure to answer the following questions.

    • Name of nominator and role in YPN-ULEM
    • Name of nominee and role in YPN-ULEM
    • YPN-ULEM’s mission includes building community, promoting personal and career development and cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Communicate a moment where the nominee has demonstrated one or all of these tasks.
    • Describe a time this individual has gone above and beyond?
    • Anything else of importance you would like to add?

    The YPN-ULEM Member of the Year Award is for a YPN-ULEM member who has paid their dues, has a recorded meeting attendance of 2/3 (6 out of 9 general body meetings) and have participated in community service. The candidate has gone above and beyond the average and the by-laws. Nominations for this award are made by the YPN-ULEM executive board only. Questions that will be answered are as follows:

    • Name of nominator and role in YPN-ULEM
    • Name of nominee and role in YPN-ULEM
    • YPN-ULEM’s mission includes building community, promoting personal and career development and cultivating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Communicate a moment where the nominee has demonstrated one or all of these tasks.
    • Describe a time this individual has gone above and beyond?
    • Anything else of importance you would like to add?

    The YPN-ULEM President's Award is awarded to a non-YPNer individual and to a business/non-profit/organization. The nominee must embody the values of community service and community building. They must share the same values the Urban League promotes and embraces. The candidate must also value education, work in the community and/or with a community based organization. This candidate is seen as someone who brings others along with them, is considered an unsung hero and at times the underdog. Final decision is made by the sitting YPN-ULEM Chapter President. Nominations for this award are made by the YPN-ULEM executive board only. Questions that will be answered are as follows:

    • Name of nominator and role in YPN-ULEM
    • Name of nominee and role in YPN-ULEM
    • What community have they been servicing? How long have he/she been doing this work?
    • What are the three most important values you want in a leader? How has this person demonstrated these values?
    • The Urban League’s mission includes building a stronger community via education and job training and placement. All with the intention having a lasting and positive impact. Describe a moment or moments where the nominee has set out to complete the ULEM’s mission and was successful.   
    • Anything else of importance you would like to add?
